SM Entertainment posted an audio teaser and three posters of Bond girls and Austin Powers series theme on October 19, 2010 on the official Girls' Generation website. The girls' style evoked classical 1970s pin-up girls, along with Western-style cowgirls. The teaser was released on SM Entertainment's official YouTube Channel and Girls' Generation's official website on October 24, at 12AM KST.
The EP featured efforts from producers and writers such as Wheesung, Jinu (Hitchhiker), Kenzie, and former Roommate and Nadia member Hwang Hyun. Girls' Generation member Yuri, wrote the lyrics for "Mistake".
A day before the official release of Hoot, it was reported that it has received over 150,000 sales in pre-orders. Meanwhile, with the release of Hoot on the 27th of October, Girls' Generation commenced their activities with a comeback stage on KBS's Music Bank on the 29th.
The mini-album, just like its predecessor "Oh!", got an international release on iTunes Store. The release was first revealed on Hoot's information box of the official music video on YouTube. Hoot was released on December 17 in Republic of China, and on December 22 in Japan. This is the first release of the group, as well as SM Entertainment itself, not to be distributed by any other large independent labels, specifically Avex Asia in other Asian countries.
